Tai Po Market Station > Butterfly Valley > Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve > Sam Mun Tsai Road, Tai Po

Butterfly Valley
The farm covers 500,000 sq ft, with plenty of photo spots: a Swan Lake sightseeing boat, a sky mirror, dreamy windmills, flower fields and more, plus 6 cute alpacas from Australia.
If you are flagging and need a top-up, try the butterfly-pea snacks and signature drinks in the garden, then set off again.

Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve
Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve is one of Asia's best-known places for watching butterflies, with more than 200 species, including the Common Birdwing and the Asian Swallowtail. It is quiet, so it draws a lot of photographers. To get there, turn off Ting Kok Road onto Fung Yuen Road and go straight. Once you are past the little blue bridge, you are there.

Tip: Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve is open to members only, but don't be put off. For just HKD$20 you can become a temporary member on the day you visit.

Sam Mun Tsai
Sam Mun Tsai is a fishing village with a long history. Besides fishing from the rafts, you can stay for the sunset. A few small boats sit on the calm water, and it still feels like a fishing village.
If you have time, go on to nearby Ma Shi Chau. The hill path has open sea views the whole way. Cross a small hill and the sandbar that joins the island, and you can make a trip of its ecology and geology.

Things to note:

  1. The stretch by Tai Po East Fire Station is a long slope. Take care going up and coming down.
  2. There are no street lights along Ma Shi Chau at night, so head back before dark.
  3. When you stop for photos, think of the residents. Park back at the bike parking when you are done, and do not leave your bike in the village.
